THE 6 & 12-STRING BANJOS ARE FUN AND AMAZING...AS A GUITARIST, YOU'LL BE ADDING A COMPLETELY NEW VOICING WITHOUT THE GROWING PAINS OF LEARNING A COMPLETELY NEW FRETBOARD LANGUAGE.

This video covers the many styles and approaches to both the 6 & 12-string banjo along with the many possible applications within most any musical setting.

Two main mediums covered are fingerpicking and flatpicking on both the 6 & 12-string banjo.

This type of banjo is considered an unorthodox instrument seldom heard within jamming circles or on recordings. In fact, if you were to ever sit in with one at a jam session, expect first to be giving explanation of what the instrument is...even so, once you’ve become accomplished on the instrument, you’ll wake up many ears to a completely new sound. There are many instances within a large ensemble, the acoustic guitar can barely be heard; yet, a 6-string banjo demands to be heard and can hold its own with any of the loudest of acoustic instruments.

Essentially a guitar-banjo hybrid, the 6-string banjo has served well as the guitarist’s answer to having a completely different voicing as an artist would with a palette of colors. Combining the volume of a banjo with the standard guitar string and fingerboard layout offers an entirely new medium available to every guitarist. The guitarist who is completely familiar with the guitar fingerboard, and having studied guitar for many years, can now emulate the banjo without having to learn an entirely different language. The studio musician who needs the extra voice on specialized sessions can now fill the void directly. No, it won’t have the exact character of the traditional 5-string banjo. However, it will stand on its own as an instrument unto itself...and, offer the flavor of the traditional banjo. There are even some techniques covered in this video that will reveal how close the 6 & 12-string come to sounding like a traditional 5-string. Beyond this, the 6 & 12-string banjo has its very own character that can stand on its own and not be imitated by any other instrument including the 5-string banjo.

If you’re not too sure about what the 6 & 12-string banjo can accomplish, this video may also serve you as a jumping off point After viewing the many styles explored on these instruments, I can only hope that you also will become inspired and determined to find your own approach to the 6 & 12-string banjo, and you will discover a new dimension in medium choices which will increase your artistic palette.
